Andoff is not open-source in the Github sense for 3 reasons:

  1. Andoff is a self-control tool and such software may not be a good fit for open source because the source can prove detrimental to the software’s raison d’ĂȘtre.

  2. The free-software movement, while economically efficient, is also explicitly Marxist (of the Anarchist variety) in philosophy. As such, some, including the initial author of this web page who paid for Andoff to be created, believe it is inhumane. Those who disagree and who would like to convince us otherwise are welcome to try. But be warned: we care much more about actual humans and concrete reality than we care about theoretical.

  3. Those who work on Andoff are not wealthy corporations; some have children to feed, and we believe they should be paid fairly for their labor.

Aiming at fairness, but knowing that will fail

Fair compensation is laudable but practically impossible. From the outset, we explicitly make clear that compensation will not be completely fair. Some will be paid more than they “deserve” and others less. But we will not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Discouraging forks with variant branches

Because some code changes and features are not likely to be acceptable to all, variants of Andoff will be built.

Andoff-rel

Andoff-min
